TheGiftShop Food & Drink, Upper Mount Gravatt

It's the kind of cafe you go to no matter what you crave. Sweet or savoury. Tangy, mild, or a whole lot of spice. The only thing every dish has in common, is freshness.

Before I get into the grit of it, I do want to give a shout-out to the waiter who served me and my foodie friend. Mark - your sideline recommendations were much appreciated, and I am oh so glad I followed your advice for the veggie options I opted for.

I'm a sucker for plants, and all you have to do is take a look at my house to know that indoor plants hold a special place it my heart. So when I saw the roof decorated in creeping leaves and lush ferns, I felt a sense of homeliness which was I rarely find dining out. Take a look!

And one more thing I immediately loved about this place, was the atmosphere made up of people enjoying their food and drink. From families with kids smashing down a croissant, to people-watchers tapping away on their computer intermittently between 5min rests to sip on a latte. To quote The Castle: "its the vibe of the thing."

Now to the real stuff: the fuel.

I went just a tiny bit crazy this day, and wanted to try something not just new, but varied. So, I grabbed a skinny latte as I do wherever I go, and paired it with a berry, apple and mint juice. My co-taster (a.k.a my mum) got her trusty soy cap and an orange, carrot and ginger juice.

For the main show, I chose The Very Good Fritters - a triple stack of veggies fritters on a bed of avo mash and zucchini noodles along with a whole bunch of goodness (as you can see). My mum got a tomato-avo-toast loaded dish which was totally expected given her tendency not to deviate. The two of us also shared some sweet potato fries and cauliflower bites (which were coated in a (to-die-for) buffalo sauce btw...

Sometimes it's better to keep a surprise, and now is one of those times. So, if you happen to be around Garden City (Upper Mount Gravatt for those not-so-locals) and would rather a fresh meal, or have been looking for the perfect spot for a new twist on brunch with the fam, here's your next stop.

Five Things To Do (other than eat)...

one. people watch (count how many people have hats on, how many dogs walk past, how many people wear a yellow shirt, or find a person speaking a foreign language)!

two. take your computer and do some extra study or admin work.

three. just sip a coffee a scroll the IG.

four. take a book you opened and never finished, and restart.

five. make a list of potential novels you could write with inspiration from your surroundings.
